Colour, Scan, and Watch Your Art Come to Life: Inside the Octaland 4D+ Coloring Book

Colouring books have been a childhood staple for generations. But what if the characters your child colours in could stand up, walk around, and dance — in the exact colours your child chose?

That's the idea behind the Octaland 4D+ Coloring Book from Octagon Studio, and it's one of the most innovative children's products we've seen in the AR space.

How It Works

The Octaland 4D+ Coloring Book contains 26 pages, each featuring a different character or scene for children to colour. So far, so normal. The magic happens after colouring.

Open the free Octagon AR+ app on any phone or tablet, point the camera at the completed page, and the character rises off the page as a fully animated 3D model — wearing the exact colours your child used. Coloured the dragon green with purple wings? That's exactly how it appears in 3D. Used rainbow stripes on the elephant? The 3D elephant has rainbow stripes.

The technology reads the colours from the physical page, so every child's creation is unique. Two children colouring the same page will produce two completely different AR animations. It's a genuinely magical experience that makes children feel like artists and creators rather than passive consumers.

Why Kids Love It

The cause-and-effect loop is incredibly satisfying for children. They make creative choices (which colours, which combinations), and those choices are immediately reflected in the 3D result. This isn't a pre-made animation that plays regardless of what you do — it's responsive to the child's own artwork.

Children often colour the same page multiple times with different colour schemes to see how the 3D model changes. They experiment with unusual colour choices specifically because they want to see what happens. That kind of creative experimentation is exactly what we want from art activities — exploring, testing, discovering.

The animated characters also move and interact, adding a storytelling dimension. Children create narratives around their coloured characters, sharing stories with siblings, parents, and friends. The combination of art, technology, and imagination makes this much more than a colouring book.

Ages and Abilities

The Octaland 4D+ Coloring Book works across a wide age range, but the sweet spot is 3-8 years old. Younger children enjoy the colouring and the "wow" of seeing their work animated, even if their colouring is loose and outside the lines (the AR still works — it reads the dominant colours in each area). Older children appreciate the precision of matching colours carefully and seeing the result faithfully reproduced in 3D.

For children with additional needs, the book provides a structured creative activity with a clear, rewarding payoff. The page-by-page format means children can work at their own pace, completing one page per session or working through several at once. There's no right or wrong way to colour the pages, which removes performance pressure.

In the Classroom

Teachers use the Octaland Coloring Book for art lessons, creative writing prompts, and reward activities. The AR element turns a simple colouring task into something children actively look forward to. It also creates natural opportunities for descriptive language work — "Describe your character. What colours did you choose? Why? What is it doing in the animation?"

For EYFS settings, the book supports colour recognition, fine motor skills, and cause-and-effect understanding. For KS1, it links to art and design, computing (understanding how technology responds to inputs), and speaking and listening.

Pairing with Other 4D+ Products

The Octaland Coloring Book uses the same Octagon AR+ app as all the 4D+ flashcard packs, so if your child already has Dinosaur 4D+, Space 4D+, or any other pack, the app is already installed and ready.

The combination of flashcards and the coloring book covers different types of engagement — the flashcards are fact-based and exploratory, while the coloring book is creative and expressive. Together, they provide a balanced mix of learning and creating that keeps children engaged across multiple sessions.
